7/30/2001 - Farther Down The Rabbit Hole
Somehow, everyone survived the night rather well. It rained a bit, but not horribly so, and by morning camp had all but dried off. There were still clouds, but nothing so menacing as we witnessed the day before. We shook the cobwebs out of our heads and got to shooting ASAP. Everyone wanted the hell out of there. We got our shots and scrambled to break camp in record time. We flip-flopped on what location to travel to next, because we didn't want to drive into the weather that had passed over us and continued east. After a few phone calls, we stuck to our original plan and headed out. N.O.R.D. and I stopped at a local surplus store for supplies, got a big fat life replenishing watermelon slurpee and blazed.
The drive, as it always is, was beautiful. The air out there in the desert is so crisp and clear, hot damn I love that place. N.O.R.D. and I arrived at the rendezvous point where chaos rapidly ensued. Some of the crew went one place, some went another we had discussed meeting at, some apparently made a plan of their own and went to a different place entirely. After grabbing some groceries and chasing down Torpedo, Desert Fox and Spitfire whom we thought were long gone by now, N.O.R.D. and I got out of there as soon as we could. Everyone seemed terribly confused for some reason, so we figured we wouldn't add to the turmoil any longer.
On the way we met a weird old flagger dude on the highway who held us up for a good half hour. Once we finally got through the construction zone, I'll be damned if we could figure out why we had been stopped. The other side of the zone was a good four miles down the road, and there seemed to be nothing awry along the way. The desert is strange that way. We shrugged it off and continued on.
Dodging cattle and jackrabbits (we dodged all but one, I'm afraid) and witnessing a magnificent sunset, N.O.R.D. and I reached the next location and dug in, relaxing in some hot springs with a few of the locals until the rest of the crew showed up a couple of hours later. The wagon circle was drawn and everyone went quickly to bed. 'Bout time.
